The Ariane is a dedicated ground attack craft, intended to outperform the Seydlitz that Steiner forces found unsuited to the role.[1]
Contents
Description[edit]
Slightly larger than the Seydlitz, the Ariane gives up speed for armor and endurance to better suit its mission of attacking BattleMech regiments. So much speed was sacrificed that the craft became too slow for air-to-air combat. Its pitiful engine makes achieving orbit an exacting task and also makes it unsuited to bombing missions; the recoil from its main weapon actually makes the craft shudder.
Pilots enjoy one of the best cockpits anywhere. The seat is thickly cushioned, the flight controls and instruments well placed. The relative luxury of its design has led to Ariane pilots being nickname "joyriders".
Few Arianes remain, deployed mainly in regular forces along the Commonwealth's border, where it's sometimes paired up with the Seydlitzes for mutual protection. In areas where it's being phased out, House Steiner usually makes it available to mercenary units in their employ.[1]
Weapons and Equipment[edit]
An AC/5 and medium laser in the nose are the only armament, with one ton of reloads.[1]
Variants[edit]
None mentioned.[1]
Canonicity[edit]
Stardate magazine is no longer considered a canonical source, making the Ariane apocryphal.
